- 100cm Tall x 120cm Wide

- Two linings for £250
Fascinated by Arab civilisation, Vernet was one of many nineteenth-century artists to depict ‘Orientalist’ subjects at the time. This painting may have been inspired by his first trip to Algeria in 1833, and, when exhibited at the Paris Salon, it was shown as ‘Hunt in the Sahara Desert 28 May 1833’. Such violent and bloodthirsty battle scenes between men and wild animals had been treated by earlier artists, most notably Rubens and the eighteenth-century French painter Jean-François de Troy.
